Fulham hold Man United

Fulham hold Man United

Brede Hangeland scored a dramatic last-gasp equaliser for Fulham against Manchester United just minutes after scoring an own goal in a pulsating match at Craven Cottage that ended 2-2.

The big defender's powerful header earned Mark Hughes' side a point after United had twice been ahead and had even missed a penalty through substitute Nani.

But it was no more than Fulham deserved after a barnstorming game that fizzed with action from start to finish.

United veteran Scholes continued his outstanding start to the new campaign by opening the scoring after only 11 minutes with a strike of real technical quality.

The midfielder, who was named man of the match for both the Community Shield and for United's opening-day victory over Newcastle, was a good 25 yards out when, from a short-corner routine, Dimitar Berbatov laid the ball back to him.

But he struck the ball so perfectly first time that it arrowed low into the corner of the net, beating goalkeeper David Stockdale at his left-hand post.

Seconds earlier Stockdale had made a wonderful save to keep out a scissor-kick volley from Berbatov but if United thought they were going to steamroller Fulham they were quickly enlightened.

Fulham, in fact, have beaten Sir Alex Ferguson's side at Old Trafford in each of the last two seasons and they almost equalised after 31 minutes through Dickson Etuhu.

The midfielder, however, was denied by another of United's veterans - goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, who made a quite remarkable double save.

United were playing without talisman striker Wayne Rooney, ruled out with a stomach illness, and fielded Mexican youngster Javier Hernandez in his place.

But, in an open match, Fulham eventually equalised when Damien Duff found the excellent Bobby Zamora on the right and he cut a perfect pass back for Simon Davies to thump home in the 58th minute.

United brought on both Ryan Giggs and Michael Owen in a bid to find a winner and thought they had done it when Giggs' corner hit Hangeland in the 84th minute an went in.

Then they won a dubious penalty when Duff cleared the ball onto his own hand - only for Nani to see his effort superbly saved by Stockdale.

That set the scene for Hangeland's thunderous header and a nerve-wracking finish in which both teams went for victory but had to settle for a point.

EPL-The Final Day

What a day it was; Manchester City had the title, then lost it, then had it again. Bolton were safe, then just as quickly they were gone. Arsenal secured their place in next season's Champions League, while fourth-placed Tottenham must wait until Sunday morning to see whether they will join them or not.
