Allsopp fires DC United

Allsopp brace fires DC United win

08/23/2010 12:08:50 AM

DC United ended a five-game losing streak in the MLS on Sunday as a Danny Allsopp brace led them a 2-0 win over Philadelphia Union.

United's win at a rain-soaked Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington gave them their first win since early June, although they are still two points behind the Union at the bottom of the Western Conference league.

Allsopp got his first on 22 minutes when an Andy Najar cross wasn't properly cleared by Danny Califf, with the Australian striker pouncing on the scraps to fire past Union stopper Chris Seitz from close range. It was the 32-year-old's first MLS goal since scoring against the Kansas City Wizards on May 5.

It was Najar again who set up the second goal after 63 minutes, as his cross sliced open the Philadelphia defence and allowed an unmarked Allsopp to stab a 12-yeard shot past Seitz.

Despite some late pressure from the Union, United held on for their first shut-out victory of the season. It was also interim coach Ben Olsen's his first triumph since taking over on August 4.

EPL-The Final Day

What a day it was; Manchester City had the title, then lost it, then had it again. Bolton were safe, then just as quickly they were gone. Arsenal secured their place in next season's Champions League, while fourth-placed Tottenham must wait until Sunday morning to see whether they will join them or not.
