Reigning champions Sydney FC are still searching for their first win of the season after a stunning David Williams goal forced a 1-1 draw with the North Queensland Fury at a rain-soaked SFS on Wednesday night.
In a game that sprung to life late in the second half, Williams ensured the Sky Blues remain winless and propping up the league more than two months into the new season with a sensational strike 15 minutes from time.
The Fury striker was given too much space 25 metres out from goal and hit a sensational swerving shot that seemed to deceive Sydney goal-keeper Liam Reddy in flight.
The home side had appeared to be cruising to a much-needed win after defender Shannon Cole's brilliant opener on 37 minutes gave them a deserved lead.
The Sydney right-back's goal was even better than Williams' strike, a wicked volley from just outside the box that will undoubtedly be a contender for goal of the season.
It came after Fury defender Eric Akoto made a hash of his headed clearance from Sung-Hwan Byun's cross, with the ball falling to Mark Bridge just outside the box.
The Sydney striker then layed the ball off to Cole, who controlled it on his chest before unleashing a wicked volley from 25metres out gave Fury goal-keeper Justin Pasfield no chance.
The defending champions had a couple of glorious chances to extend their lead in the early stages of the second half, with striker Alex Brosque and skipper Terry McFlynn both going close in quick succession.
Those misses would come back to haunt Vitezslav Lavicka's side as Williams ensured they remain on the bottom of the ladder and without a win after eight games.
Sydney had thought they had stolen a win nine minutes from the end when McFlynn's chip from just outside the box hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down on the line.
While Sydney players frantically appealed for a goal, replays showed assistant referee Daniel Dewhurst had made the right call with the ball not entirely crossing the line.
McFlynn then wasted a final chance two minutes from time when he blazed a header over the bar from close range to send the crowd of 6,978, Sydney's lowest ever home attendance, away frustrated.
