Newcastle 2 : Fulham 1

Newcastle 2 : Fulham 1

Newcastle United continued their superb start to the Premier League season as a Leon Best double helped them to a 2-1 victory over Fulham.

Sunday's win at St James' Park leaves Alan Pardew's side unbeaten this term, while Clint Dempsey's late strike provided Fulham with just their first goal of the domestic campaign.

The first chance of the game fell to the hosts Newcastle, with Yohan Cabaye setting up Peter Lovenkrands, only for the Danish striker to nod the ball just wide of Mark Schwarzer's post.

Fulham youngster Pajtim Kasami peppered Tim Krul's goal from distance, while the visitors were unlucky not to make more of a well worked Danny Murphy free kick that found Steven Sidwell in the penalty box.

Newcastle began to threaten in the final ten minutes of the opening period, with Gabriel Obertan crossing dangerously into the box for Lovenkrands, who faltered under pressure from Brede Hangeland.

Schwarzer was forced into action just before the break, with the Australian diving down well to save from Jonas Gutierrez's header.

The host's dominance paid off after the break, with Best on hand to tap in Schwarzer's parry to put his side 1-0 up after 48 minutes.

Martin Jol's team should have grabbed an equaliser ten minutes later when Sidwell edged past Danny Simpson to meet Duff's cross, only for the midfielder to direct his point-blank header straight at goalkeeper Krul.

Yet as Fulham searched for an equaliser, it was Newcastle who doubled their tally 20 minutes into the half.

Substitute Demba Ba was the architect, firing a low cross into the path of Best, whose sublime first touch opened up space and allowed him to slot home from six-yards.

Fulham responded with a series of attacking thrusts, and Krul showed outstanding reflexes to thwart Fulham captain Murphy's header from close range. But the Dutchman could not keep out Dempsey’s looping header on 88 minutes.

The American's effort proved a mere conciliation as the hosts were able to see out the remaining five minutes of stoppage time.

EPL-The Final Day
14/05/2012 4:41:36 PM
What a day it was; Manchester City had the title, then lost it, then had it again. Bolton were safe, then just as quickly they were gone. Arsenal secured their place in next season's Champions League, while fourth-placed Tottenham must wait until Sunday morning to see whether they will join them or not.
