Breath of life for NZ Test cricket

Breath of life for NZ Test cricket

New Zealand's 70th Test cricket victory may, in time, be seen as the start of the next significant era of the game.

Frustrated by a lack of consistent Test match cricket over the last four or five years, New Zealand have found winning, consistently, elusive, and there remains much work to be done - especially in relation to the side's batting.

However, the breath of life and enthusiasm the seven-run win over Australia at Hobart will give, cannot be under-estimated.

For several years, New Zealand have lacked a significant attack, mainly as the result of injury to key performers at inopportune times. And it should not be forgotten the man who has carried New Zealand through that era, Daniel Vettori was forced out with a hamstring injury minutes before the Test started.

But what resulted was the chance for a tyro in left-armer Trent Boult to be introduced and the Northern Districts prodigy who has had big letters by his name as a comer for a year or two, did nothing wrong in an accomplished display.

What shouldn't be forgotten in the final analysis is just how invaluable Boult's innings of 21 from 16 balls was at the end of the second innings. With such a close finishing margin the runs proved vital.

However, it was the manner in which relative Test youngsters Doug Bracewell, the moral winner of the man of the match, and Tim Southee took their chances when they prised open the Australian middle-order that offered most encouragement.

Their swing bowling was a delight and Bracewell's second five-wicket bag in only three Tests is a demonstration, if it wasn't already apparent that he is looking at a big future in the game.

With careful management of the young bowlers looming on New Zealand's horizon there finally appears to be a battery of talent available and that can only be of benefit for the long-term interests in the game.

What now needs to occur, and when hasn't that been the case, is for New Zealand's precocious batting talent to be much more consistent with higher output.

To be able to head Australia on the first innings when having to bat in such difficult conditions shows the side is not without ability and the goal has now got to be to show against South Africa later in the summer that this Hobart result was not just a rogue effort.

The example set by Dean Brownlie should be absorbed. He offers solidity and judgment in the middle-order and once the order has been settled with Jesse Ryder and Kane Williamson having their places confirmed, whether at No.3 or No.5, New Zealand can look forward to more prosperous results in Tests.

Being able to achieve Test success will always be the measure of a side. After the Brisbane Test when the batting and fielding let New Zealand down badly it looked like a long road ahead.

However, Hobart has shown the resilience in the side and coach John Wright can reflect on a job well done and his work with captain Ross Taylor is clearly working and offering hope of a brighter future for the New Zealand Test game.
