Warriors return fire

Warriors return fire

03/10/2010 07:50:49 AM

Western Australia has ripped through the Queensland top order to leave the Bulls reeling at 5-65 at stumps on day one of their Sheffield Shield clash at the Gabba.

Defending a first innings total of 286, Nathan Coulter-Nile starred for Western Australia, bowling accurately and extracting good movement to finish with figures of 3-1 off five overs.

Steve Magoffin kick-started the Warriors attack when he claimed Wade Townsend caught behind - a decision the nuggety left-hander may not have fully agreed with.

Craig Philipson, batting at three in the place of injured Lee Carseldine, very nearly joined Townsend in the dressing sheds after he toed his first delivery just over gully, but soon settled at the crease in partnership with Ryan Broad.

Ben Edmunson's third over proved expensive with Philipson driving beautifully for a boundary before another four came from overthrows, taking the Bulls to 1-28 after six.

After ten overs, the Bulls pair of Philipson and Broad were batting with composure, guiding their side to 1-41, but the Warriors quicks were bowling accurately and finding the occasional edge.

The Queensland 50 came up after 73 deliveries, but the introduction of Coulter-Nile from the Vulture Street end brought about the end of Broad (17) who edged to a diving Luke Ronchi behind the stumps.

In his second first-class match and with just 11 overs left in the day, 19-year-old Chris Lynn came to the crease with a tricky passage of play to negotiate,.

Lynn's brief stay at the wicket came to an end for just four, Coulter-Nile taking his second wicket courtesy of a Michael Swart screamer, claimed with one hand, inches off the ground at second slip.

Nathan Reardon was the next man in and soon lost his batting partner after Philipson became Coulter-Nile's third scalp when he edged behind to the safe hands of Marcus North.

After a bumper day behind the stumps, Queensland wicketkeeper Chris Hartley came to the crease with his side floundering at 4-61, the batsman needing just 14 runs to become the second-highest scoring wicketkeeper in a Shield season.

Coulter-Nile couldn't be kept out of the game, though, the Western-Australian youngster taking a sharp catch at third slip to dismiss Reardon off the bowling of Magoffin.

Bulls skipper Chris Simpson came to the crease only to block out the last over of play and head back to the dressing rooms knowing his side will need a captain's knock on day two.
