Wade stays grounded

Wade stays grounded

02/05/2012 07:59:55 PM

Having exploded onto the international scene with man-of-the-match awards on debut at both ODI and T20I level, Matthew Wade is probably entitled to believe his place in Australia's limited-overs line-up is reasonably safe.

But the 24-year-old wicketkeeper/batsman - preferred to Brad Haddin for the first three games of the Commonwealth Bank Tri-Series - is taking nothing for granted.

Wade backed up his match-winning 72 from 43 balls-faced in last Wednesday's T20I in Sydney with 67 and two catches in Australia's decisive 65-run win over India in the opening one-dayer in Melbourne on Sunday.

Asked whether he had allowed himself to think beyond game three, Wade shook his head.

"I think that would be a bad option," he said.

"The environment that I'm in, it's all about the next game."

"I just want to do as well as I can in the three games that I'm picked."

"If I look too far ahead, you don't know what's going to happen - it's a pretty fickle game that we play."

"You've just got to live in the moment and concentrate on the next ball."

Wade believes he's coping well with the significant step up in intensity at ODI level, not just with the bat, but behind the stumps as well.

"I definitely feel like I'm keeping as well as I ever have," he said.

"In the environment of the Australian team, I'm catching more balls every day."

"I feel on top of my game, yeah."

Wade said the Australians were especially pleased to rebound from last Friday's T20I loss to India and looking forward to their next assignment against Sri Lanka in Perth on Friday.

"Momentum is everything in cricket," he said.

"The blokes coming in, obviously 'Punter' and 'Clarkey' coming in from the Test matches, they brought that momentum forward, I think, and really pushed us on."

"Before we went out to field we just wanted to keep our energy up and really put the heat on India."

"They were the things we were concentrating on."

"We weren't really looking back at the Twenty20; we debriefed that and moved on."
