VVS top pick at IPL auction

01/31/2012 06:21:19 PM

A whopping 144 players, including 13 New Zealanders, will go under the hammer at the players' auction on Saturday in Bangalore ahead of the fifth edition of the Indian Premier League.

With the Kochi Tuskers Kerala banned by the BCCI, several India cricketers will be up for grabs as well including VVS Laxman, S Sreesanth, Ravindra Jadeja, RP Singh, Parthiv Patel, R Vinay Kumar, Ramesh Powar and VRV Singh.

Among the internationals, notable players are Brad Hogg, who made a comeback to the Australian side aged 40 for the T20s against India and his compatriots, bowling all-rounder Mitchell Johnson, in-form Peter Siddle, Usman Khawaja and Luke Ronchi.

New Zealand's contingent includes Brendon McCullum, Kyle Mills, Jamie How, Ian Butler, Kane Williamson, Andy McKay, Rob Nicol, Lou Vincent, Doug Bracewell, Reece Young, Daniel Flynn, Adam Milne and Neil Wagner.

There will be 13 cricketers from England for the auction including James Anderson, Ian Bell, Owais Shah, Ravi Bopara, Graeme Swann and Chris Tremlett.

South Africa also has 19 players which include all rounder Johan van der Wath, Herschelle Biggs, Nicky Boje, Justin Kemp, Jacques Rudolph, Alviro Peterson, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Imran Tahir, Vernon Philander and Ryan Mclaren among others.

Notable players from Sri Lanka include Mahela Jayawwardene, Muttiah Muralitharan, Dilhara Fernando, Farveez Maharoof and Ajantha Mendis.

Several West Indians will also be looking forward to a hefty paycheck after good performances in the Champions League T20 and the Test and ODI series last year as the likes of Adrian Barath, Devendra Bishoo, Suniel Narine, Samuel Badree, Andre Russel, Darren Ganga, Ravi Rampaul, Darren Bravo and Dwayne Smith are expected to be in demand.

Laxman's has been handed a reserve base price of 400,000 USD, the highest at the auction along with McCullum, Swann and Sreesanth.

"The shortlist comprises some outstanding cricket talent. Given that it was prepared on the basis of the feedback of the franchises themselves, the stage is set for an exciting and eventful player auction, this Saturday," IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla said in a statement.

"The Franchises purchased the bulk of their respective squads in 2011. Their aim at the upcoming auction will be to bring in some players who can make a difference to their prospects in the tournament. The auction will mark the formal opening of IPL 2012," Shukla added.
