"If we can get a couple of wickets early on then things can start swinging our way.
"We had such a Test match in Sydney recently so we don't want to get back into that sort of situation.
"We are not really thinking about it. I'm not going to say it in the dressing room. That's just the way the game is.
"We know Australia are very, very tough in these situations, but we have to make sure we come out on top and be tougher than them."
Asked what score he would like to chase in the fourth innings Waqar replied: "Under 200. That would be still chaseable on this pitch.
"It's a pretty slow pitch and looking at how the Australians bowled in the first innings we have a chance."
The former fast bowler also identified Ponting's wicket as crucial to his side's chances.
The 35-year-old Tasmanian became the second batsmen to reach 12,000 Test runs during his innings and after becoming the first batsman to pass 50 in this game would seemingly hold the key to the result.
"He's got 12,000 Test runs so he's a class act. He's looking good at the moment, he's definitely a dangerman for us," Waqar added.
"If we can fetch him early then maybe things will change."
