Southee out to improve

Southee returns to debut dreamland

01/24/2012 10:06:02 PM

After a dream debut as a 19-year-old at McLean Park, it's almost unfathomable that Tim Southee's Test figures stack up the way they do almost four years down the track.

By taking five first innings English scalps and scoring New Zealand's fastest ever half-century, eventually finishing not out on 77 from 40 balls, Southee prompted predictions that he would be the country's next great all-rounder.

But heading into Thursday's Test against Zimbabwe, the numbers don't quite stack up.

It should be prefaced that Southee is still only 23, which can often be forgotten given his length of time in the national side.

From 15 Tests, he has added only one further half-century in averaging 20.04 and his 40 wickets have come at the inglorious rate of 42.80 per scalp. There still remains only a solitary five-wicket haul on his bio.

Improving his bowling average to one that more accurately befits his talent, and aiding New Zealand's fortunes in the process, is top of the agenda.

But the onus is also being put on he and fellow young gun Doug Bracewell to produce runs at number eight and nine to justify playing four seamers along with spinner Daniel Vettori at No.6.

Very brief cameos, such as 17 off 12 balls and 13 off five before holing out each time in Australia, will no longer be tolerated from Southee.

"You always want to improve your game," he said. "Just looking at the way Dan's turned his batting around in the last five years, he's a great one to have around the team and someone we can all learn from and show it's possible to do.

"Dougy's shown he's a very capable batsman and myself and Trent (Boult) have shown in glimpses that we can also hold a bat.

"It's always something we've worked on. We don't want to be bowlers who can't hold a bat."

Nor does he want to be a bowler who shines with the white ball and cannot find the same effectiveness in the longer form.

As with the rest of his team-mates, Southee has been exclusively involved in Twenty20 cricket since taking a pair of crucial wickets (those of Brad Haddin and Peter Siddle) to back up Bracewell's fourth innings heroics in their Hobart victory over Australia.

Bowling is bowling, as far as he's concerned and the switch to Test cricket is one he'll be doing with confidence.

"The more I've bowled lately and the volume has gone up the better I've felt.

"I'm pretty happy with where it's at."

And while it is resigned to the record books now, the euphoria of Hobart is still being fed off.

"We went around the room and it's still fresh in everyone's mind and we want to have more afternoons like that one in Hobart; sitting around enjoying each other's success after a Test win.

"It would be a shame if we did that work against Australia then all of a sudden we turned up with a below-par performance."
