Selection stumps Forrest

01/30/2012 07:43:33 PM

Queensland batsman Peter Forrest says he is shocked by his selection to Australia's ODI squad.

The 26-year-old joined Queensland this summer after failing to cement his spot in his home state New South Wales and is currently leading the Sheffield Shield run-scoring list with 581 at 58.10, including three centuries.

Forrest, who captained Brisbane Heat in the KFC Big Bash Leauge, said he was surprised to be picked ahead of controversial omission Callum Ferguson.

Ferguson has played 30 ODIs for Australia and has amassed 286 Ryobi One-day Cup runs at 71.5 for South Australia this season.

The right-hander has been only modest in the 50-over format, scoring 176 runs at 29.33 this season for the Bulls, but his four-day form was enough for Australia's new selection team to give him the nod.

"It's a massive surprise," Forrest said.

"I guess if you're scoring runs in any competition then you're a chance but I thought I'd be more of a chance playing for Australia in a Test match given my Shield form, not that I thought I'd be close there."

The Commonwealth Bank Series, involving Sri Lanka and India, will start Sunday in Melbourne. A best-of-three finals series will be played between the top-two teams from March 4-8.

Forrest will also be available for a Prime Minister's XI warm up match against Sri Lanka at Canberra on Friday, where he will be vice-captain to Brad Haddin.

Despite being an Australia A representative last summer, Forrest could not consolidate his spot in the Blues' star-studded top-order.

And when Queensland invited him north Forrest thought it was an offer he couldn't refuse, and he joined Ed Cowan and Daniel Christian as ex-New South Welshmen to prosper in a new state.

"It was a no-brainer," Forrest said.

"I think they saw me as a top-order player but when you have guys like (Phil) Hughes, (Usman) Khawaja and (David) Warner and (Simon) Katich who all bat up the top it was hard to find a spot."

"I remember the last time I got dropped and I remember my (one-day) stats - I was averaging 41 and striking at 88 (per 100 balls) and that still wasn't good enough to get in the team.

"It was extremely frustrating," he said.
