Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum were in record-breaking form for New Zealand in the one-off Test against Bangladesh at Seddon Park in Hamilton to set their team up well.
The pair notched a new sixth-wicket Test partnership record with 337 runs with Guptill out for 189 and McCullum finishing on 185 and were just 13 runs shy of the world record.
As well as each claiming their highest Test scores, McCullum surpassed Ian Smiths record for the most runs hit by a New Zealand wicket keeper in an innings.
McCullum said it was great relief to get over 100 after his recent dry-patch and that passing Smith's record of 173 meant a lot.
"There was obviously a lot of satisfaction after the last little while where I've got scores towards 100 but haven't really got past the line," he said.
"To bat in a partnership with Martin and recover from the situation we were in (126-4) we knew we both had to get a big score."
"It means a lot [passing Smith's record] to go past an icon in New Zealand cricket in terms of his status in the game. So to do that, and in my 50th Test as well, is pretty significant.
Guptill reached his first ever test century in the morning's play and went on to notch a total that will life his confidence immensely ahead of the looming series against Australia.
The 23-year-old said it was a great feeling although he was beginning to feel the fatigue after 444 minutes of batting.
"Getting the first Test 100 would always be a great feeling and to be out there with Brendon in the position were in, it was fantastic," he said.
"It was great to go past the 150 but I was getting a bit tired out there."
Bangladesh will continue its first batting innings on day three of the Test after finishing day two on 87-1. New Zealand made 553-7 before declaring after 135 overs.
