Kevin Pietersen has apologised for his outburst on Twitter following his omission from England's one-day and Twenty20 squads.
The out-of-form batsman prematurely announced his axing on Tuesday, hours before the squad was to be officially named, with his angry message also including an expletive.
He hastily deleted the message, but not before it was sighted by several users.
"It came out in a way I obviously didn't want it to come out," Pietersen told Surrey TV.
"The Twitter thing was a direct message - as anyone who is on Twitter knows, you can send direct messages to your friends, or whoever's following you and you follow them - so I must apologise that it ended up in the public domain, and also apologise for the language I used in it."
Pietersen's axing comes after he has struggled at Test level for his country, having gone 26 Test innings without scoring a hundred.
However, his good form in the shorter version of the game - he was named Player of the Tournament at the Twenty20 World Cup in May - has left some commentators baffled by the decision to drop the 30-year-old from the upcoming one-day and Twenty20 internationals against Pakistan.
Pietersen said he accepts the selectors' decision, though admitted he was upset when informed.
"I hold nothing against the England selectors and the England set-up at all, I was just pretty upset and frustrated with my own form," he said.
"I've spoken to the coach, the Twenty20 captain, the chairman of selectors, and the managing director of English cricket, and they all totally understand."
England take on Pakistan in the first of two Twenty20 clashes in Cardiff on Sunday.
