the most of the flat pitch and short boundaries.
Bond and Tuffey were the best of the New Zealand bowlers, each picking up two wickets while Franklin, Oram and Southee claimed one apiece.
Australian skipper Ricky Ponting took his time to find his feet at the crease after his recent break, while Michael Clarke (22) also struggled to get off the mark before losing his wicket edging a short delivery from Tuffey into the gloves of McCullum.
Ponting was dismissed on 44 when he fell for a slower ball from Franklin and was caught by Guptill shortly before Hussey reached his 50 off 53 balls to steady the Australian innings.
Hussey then fell on 59 before Mitchell Johnson entered the crease and began to smash some big shots to the boundary to finish the innings not out on 21.
Although the win will be remembered fondly by New Zealand, it came at a cost with Oram having to be carried off the field in the first innings with a serious-looking knee injury. He will see a specialist in Auckland on Thursday.
