07/22/2010 08:48:10 AM

Retiring Sri Lanka spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan has become the first bowler to take 800 Test wickets.

The 38-year-old spin maestro - who needed eight scalps at the start of the match to reach 800 - reached the historic landmark with the wickets of Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha on the final day of the first Test against India in Galle.

Playing the final Test of his career, the veteran off-spinner had made his task all the more easier over the course of the previous four days, picking up six Indian wickets to help set up a fitting end to a glorious 19-year Test career.

Murali's record feat also signalled the end of the tourists' innings as they were all out for 338, having resumed the final day on 5-181.

India led by 94 runs following-on in response to Sri Lanka's first innings total of 520.

Muralitharan's records:
- Most wickets in Tests: 800 (Next best, Shane Warne: 708)

- Most five-wicket hauls (in an innings) in Tests: 67 (Next best, Warne: 37)

- Most 10-wicket hauls (in a match) in Tests: 22 (Next best, Warne: 10)

- Most wickets taken bowled in Tests: 167 (Next best, Warne: 116)

- Most wickets taken caught in Tests: 435 (Next best, Warne: 418)

- Most balls bowled in Tests: 44,039 (Next most, Kumble: 40,850)
