India romps home

Four wickets from Virender Sehwag and a patient 82 by Gautam Gambhir helped India post an emphatic six-wicket triumph over Bangladesh in the second Asia Cup one-day international game at Dambulla.

Needing just 168 to win, the Indians - boosted by some disciplined batting from Gambhir - never looked likely to slip up and passed their victory target with nearly 20 overs to spare.

India was looking to get its regular opening pair back among the runs.

The fiery Sehwag (11) showed good intent but, after an engaging start, was caught behind by Mushfiqur Rahim off the bowling of Mashrafe Mortaza.

Fellow opener Gambhir and Virat Kohli kept India in cruise mode, though, taking just nine overs to get 50 on the board before bad light stopped play.

India was dealt a double blow following the restart. Kohli (11) was beaten by skipper Shakib Al Hasan's flight and stumped by Mushfiqur, and the Bangladesh captain then trapped Rohit Sharma (nought) leg before wicket with the next ball.

Gambhir was dropped on 48 by Tamim Iqbal but survived to prod his way to his 20th ODI half-century from 67 deliveries.

India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (38) kept things steady at the other end, but the duo's 78-run fourth-wicket stand was broken in the 31st over when Gambhir fell lbw playing across the line to Mashrafe.

However, Dhoni's boundary made sure of the win and also a bonus point, with India having reached their target well before the 40th over.

Earlier, after Bangladesh opted to bat first, Sehwag took four cheap wickets as India restricted the Tigers to 167 all out.

Sehwag took four of the final five wickets to fall at a cost of just six runs in 2.5 overs, ruining Bangladesh's hopes of posting a big score.

Bangladesh got off to a decent start, with Imrul Kayes and Tamim dealing mainly in boundaries - the former smashing Zaheer Khan for three fours in the second over.

The 35-run first-wicket stand was broken by Praveen Kumar when Tamim was caught at cover by Suresh Raina.

New man Mohammad Ashraful then gave in to the lure of the big shot and was out for 20, lobbing Ashish Nehra for an easy catch to Kumar at square leg.

Nehra then made a crucial breakthrough in the 16th over. His bouncer forced the pull from Kayes, resulting in a soft dismissal for 37 as Sehwag showed safe hands.

Mahmudullah (23) and Mushfiqur (30) gave the Tigers hope of reaching a competitive total, but departed within three overs of each other - both caught behind off Ravindra Jadeja and Sehwag respectively.

Sehwag then wrapped up the Bangladesh tail with three more wickets as he removed Suhrawadi Shuvo (four), Shafiul Islam and Syed Rasel (both nought).
