Pakistan crumbles

08/28/2010 07:59:26 PM

Pakistan have sensationally crumbled on day three of the fourth test against England at Lord's to be on the verge of a humiliating defeat.

At the end of Saturday's play Pakistan were following on at 41-4 after being bowled out for a meagre 74 in their first innings in reply to England's 446.

The hosts resumed their first innings at 346-7 with day-two heroes Jonathan Trott and Stuart Broad both bringing up their 150s before claiming the world record eighth-wicket Test partnership with a stand of 332 runs.

Trott was eventually caught behind off Wahab Riaz for 184 in an innings which included 19 fours, while Broad was trapped in front lbw off Saeed Ajmal, not before he smashed 18 fours and a six on his way to 169.

Bursting with confidence after scoring his maiden Test century, Broad then claimed two of the first three wickets as Pakistan's brittle batting line-up fell apart.

Yasir Hameed was dismissed in just the fourth over of their first innings, and two overs later the visitors found themselves at 3-10 with James Anderson chipping in to claim the wicket of Imran Farhat.

Pakistan captain Salman Butt provided some resistance with 26 off 58 deliveries, before spinner Graeme Swann bowled him to make it 46-4.

Azhar Ali (10) and Kamran Akmal (13) were the only other Pakistani batsmen to make double figures in their total of 74, with Swann the best of the bowlers with figures of 4-12 off eight overs.

Pakistan's second innings started much like the first, with Farhat dismissed in the fourth over for just five runs, and Yasir Hameed trapped in front by James Anderson for three.

Butt got off to yet another good start but Swann claimed his wicket for the second time in the day before Mohammad Yousuf hauled out to Jonathan Trott on the boundary off the bowling of Steven Finn.

Rain stopped play after Yousuf's dismissal as England look set to seal a 3-1 series victory.
